Stirling High School, Stirling

Pupils and staff had a great time celebrating European day of Languages, and learning about the importance of language learning! 

During PSE, all pupils took part in a languages quiz, which was created by our senior language ambassadors. Pupils were asked to identify different landmarks, and try to figure out which language certain words were from! 

During class time, S1 took part in a Dragon's Den themed sales pitch. They were given a wide variety of items, and asked to sell them using a variety of words and phrases in French. 

S2 learned about a wide range of languages are were asked to find out how to say 'hello' in a European language, and create bunting with which to decorate the class. 

S3 thought about where languages could take them, and created postcards which highlighted the importance of language learning, and the different opportunities languages bring.

Turnbull High School, East Dunabartonshire

This year to celebrate the European Day of Languages the Modern Languages department arranged a variety of activities for the pupils. 

Our S1 pupils took part in a European treasure hunt, seeking answers from the very knowledgeable Turnbull staff. The S2 cohort participated in a European quiz. They worked in groups and had to identify languages from video clips, songs and film titles. The S3 classes created their own language passport by attending a variety of language lessons presented by our talented and inspiring bilingual pupils. By the end of the sessions they could say basic greetings in French, Spanish, Italian, German, Lithuanian and Polish! 

Our S3 and S4 Spanish classes will also be attending the GFT to watch a Spanish film and sample some traditional Spanish tapas at Café Andaluz. In the Senior phase, the S4 Spanish class took part in some rock painting with a European theme. Higher classes enjoyed a foreign language film morning and the Advanced Higher Spanish also took part in a Multilingual Escape room. They had to complete a number of language related tasks and overcome challenges such as “the floor is lava”, “burst the balloons to find the clue” and apply some numeracy skills to solve the number problem giving them the code to the locked box containing the final clue. Congratulations to the winning team Kyle McLean and Eunice Okeyelele. Although there were some sore losers! ¡Lo pasamos bomba!

Boghall Primary, West Lothian

Lots of events happened across our school to celebrate EDL. Some of these included:

• P7/6 Food Taster Session - label a variety of foods then match to the right country, then taste! 
• P6 Spelling Challenge - translate spelling words into either French or Spanish using Google translate, then translate back to make sure the interpretation makes sense. 
• P7A/B Reflective Reading activity on a media clip from Ratatouille then they made some ratatouille to taste. 

• P7/6 Brazilian EAL pupil hosted a Portuguese lesson introducing greetings and colours, with a follow up task to research culture and traditions in Brazil. 
• P7/6 Researching Picasso - created a Cubism piece of art linking understanding of 2D shapes and angles.

• Language Ambassadors - whole school language survey, creating a Boghall specific welcome sign for Parent Consultation evening.
• P5/4 pupil taking initiative to translate her HWB Healthy Lunch Box into her L1 - Polish.

Our Lady's High School (Cumbernauld), North Lanarkshire

European Day of Languages was celebrated in our school by all year groups and enjoyed by all. 

• S1 took part in a treasure hunt and completed passport posters about European countries. 
• S2 completed a European Quiz. 
• S3 took part in the Eurovision Song Contest Quiz. 
• S4/5/6 had a foreign film festival and enjoyed a movie in a foreign language!

Trinity High School, Renfrewshire

To celebrate European Day of Languages our S1 pupils wrote postcards to their favourite teachers in the target language explaining what their favourite subject was. S1 pupils also took part in a flag competition. 

S2 and S3 pupils watched an original language film and created information posters. A winning poster was picked in each class and prizes were given. 

S4 pupils took part in a general knowledge quiz on Europe and some pupils came along to our photobooth at lunchtime. 

Dalbeattie High School, Dumfries and Galloway

Dalbeattie High School celebrated the European Day of Languages across the school by all tutor groups decorating pennants with different European languages and flags, and participating in a European Day of Languages quiz. 

In language classes S1 did a Where in the World? team quiz and S3 Spanish had to gain their European passports by completing a series of challenges in Spanish across different school subjects (science, geography, maths, languages etc.)

Caldervale High School, North Lanarkshire

We had a great time in the Modern Languages department as we celebrated European Day of Languages. S1s were treated to a "French breakfast" and a scavenger hunt. All thoroughly enjoyed their pain au chocolat. 

Our pupils also took part in a Guess The Teacher quiz where they had to identify what teacher was speaking a foreign language. We have some excellent linguists in the Caldervale staff! 

Our S3s also did some work on the importance of language learning and created posters to highlight the benefits.
